Fourteen students in our Human Rights & Genocide class had the privilege to head to Washington, D.C. earlier this month as part of the Holocaust & Social Justice Program, generously funded by the Hebrew Congregation of Chautauqua. Traveling with Mrs. Kardashian and Mr. Zak, along with students from four other county schools, the students were able to see landmarks and monuments that represent the transformation of our country, and as the pivotal point of the trip, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, where the students had a transformative and profound learning experience. The students had the incredible opportunity to meet with a survivor at the museum and, prior to their trip, with a second-generation survivor speaking on behalf of her father, who had been part of the Kindertransport and eventually became a liberator on behalf of the United States. The students had some incredibly unique opportunities as a part of this trip that allowed them to see the foundations of our government, examining the National Archives, visiting The People's House and touring the Capitol building, as well as taking a night tour of the monuments and a walking tour, learning about those who fought for the rights of all. The trip ended exploring a local synagogue in D.C., where the students learned more about Judaism, heard about the Torah and saw some of the beautiful pieces that center the faith, including a scroll that survived the Holocaust. The students were able to have meaningful conversations, reflect on historical and contemporary issues and, in the words of one of our students, "Realize that their voice matters, even when they think it doesn't."

Our quiz bowl team competed twice this past month at Frewsburg, facing off against Jamestown and Warren. While the outcome was not to our advantage this year, all four students - Molly Shaw, Bryan Wagner, Andrew Arnold and Rowan Sebouhian, who were all new to the program this year - worked together as a team and look forward to next year. This year's setup was different from what it has been in the past, as it was taken over by a dedicated group of teachers from each school who coordinated tournaments for students to come together and compete, as in previous years.
"I'm really proud of our kids and grateful for the fun we had. I've been doing this for about eight years and watching the sportsmanship and seeing the kids test their knowledge is really a sense of pride," Mrs. Kardashian, the team coach, said. "We would also like to send a big thank you to Mrs. Shaw, our team booster mom, who made us all knowledge packs for each tournament!"
