Recently, Mrs. Pagano's and Mrs. Schuster's classes had a very special Mystery Monday reading event to kick off the month of June with two mystery readers. Our first reader was Isaiah Restivo (Mrs. Pagano's grandson). Isaiah is a first grader who loves to read and has shown significant growth in Mrs. Caughel's classroom this year. He selected a funny but real book to share his love of reading called, "Feelings are Like Farts." He modeled fluent reading with great inflection, and the students loved having him join the class as a reader. The students wrote in their journals about the similarities between feelings and farts. Who knew how similar both can be! The students gave Isaiah a really warm and encouraging welcome, which was heartwarming.
Our second mystery reader was Mrs. Michelle Helmer, and she read "The Water Princess," a story about the challenges women in Burkina Faso, Africa face when trying to bring water to their villages. Students had some great connecting questions and thoughts to our current EL Module on Water Challenges. We discussed how fortunate we are to have easy access to water while others around the world struggle to even get water at all.
What a great way to start off the month of June. We look forward to having two returning guests as our last two Mystery Monday readers. This reading adventure has been very memorable, and the students will be selecting their FAVORITE book from the year and writing a paragraph about why it was their favorite as a culminating writing activity in their journals.
