The first official Groundhog Day was in 1886 in Punxatawney, PA at Gobbler's Knob, and the tradition continues to this day. In German folklore, if a hedgehog saw his shadow on Candlemas, there would be a second winter. As German settlers moved to the US, and hedgehogs were scarce, the traditions and legends transformed.

The Lunar or Chinese New Year starts on the new moon at the midpoint between winter solstice and spring eqinox. This two-week celebration includes parties, parades, and fireworks. 2025 is the Year of the Snake, said to bring wisdom, adaptability and a sense of transformation.

Mrs. Sills' 5th graders celebrated Lunar New Year today! After reading and learning more about Lunar New Year this year, the year of the snake, we wanted to celebrate this holiday together in school. Each student received a red envelope with two coins in it, a bilingual Happy New Year card, and to top it all off, they were treated to egg rolls and fortune cookies! The 5th grade team had a blast celebrating Lunar New Year! #BKP #SCCares

Today we celebrate the life and achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., an influential minister and activist in the American Civil Rights movement. Dr. King won the Nobel Prize in 1964 for his non-violent approach to ending segregation and racism. #BKP #SCCares

Mrs. Michalak has kicked off the SCCS 20/25 book challenge with Kwame Alexander's book, Black Star. District employees and students are welcome to join the challenge to read 25 books. There are 25 prompts that guide the book selection. Black Star by Kwame Alexander fulfills the reading prompt, "a book that has a competition in it."
