𝗞𝗜𝗖𝗞𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗜𝗧 𝗨𝗣 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗠𝗨𝗡𝗜𝗧𝗬 The inaugural Charity Kickball Tournament to benefit the Silver Creek Food Pantry and FeedMore WNY was held recently (Thursday, June 9, 2022) on the campus of Silver Creek Central School District. 🦵⚽️💛🖤 The kickball tourney saw 30 students split into four teams while 20 educators were divided into two teams for an afternoon of fun, giving back, teamwork and lots of Black Knight spirit. Inspired by their experience attending a Ukraine symposium in May 2022, the students who participated talked with social studies teacher Jessica Kardashian about what they could do to give back in a multitude of ways. Fourteen freshmen attendees and Principal Kyle Yelich brainstormed what could be done on campus and locally to benefit our community and give back. They decided that a kickball tournament would be the way to go and we brought it to fruition with under a month of planning. Each player had a “fee” of five canned goods and, once signed up, were randomly separated into teams: the New Kicks on the Block, the Lethal Weapons, the Blue Sox and the Blue Jays. All teams had to decide their captains, uniforms and team name and choose their placements to help build the teamwork spirit. While Mrs. Kardashian coordinated the event, about 20 SCCS staff stepped up to play, pitch, officiate and support! Principal Yelich pitched game 1, Mr. Johnson game 2, Mr. Prevet game 3 and Mr. Sadler the student championship. Mr. Hamms offered to officiate and was aided by our pitchers when they weren't on the mound. They also had Team Awesome (The A team), and S.K.I.L.L.S (Superior Kicks International Leisure League Supreme of Kickball). S.K.I.L.L.S reigned superior in this tournament, but there is talk of a rematch! “I cannot thank my colleagues enough for supporting me, our kids, this endeavor and bringing so much spirit into it,” says Kardashian. The student championship came down to Blue Sox vs. Blue Jays (who ironically wore red) and the Blue Jays won it for all of the gold! The winners each received a trophy and bragging rights, but they were all winners for showing an incredible amount of school spirit, raising $40 and collecting more than 200 canned goods to split between the Silver creek Food Pantry and FeedMore WNY. “I couldn't be prouder of the kids who planned, played, volunteered and my colleagues who helped to make this such a success,” says Kardashian. “It will now become a yearly event that I think anyone and everyone who attended will be greatly looking forward to.”

The Knights Against Cancer club of Silver Creek Central School District headed back to Kevin Guest House in Buffalo recently (Wednesday, June 8, 2022) to cook dinner in person for the first time since February 2020. Our dedicated Black Knight volunteers have been preparing food and dropping it off over the past couple years, but this was the first time they were allowed back on campus to do one of their favorite community service events and give to those staying at Kevin Guest House while either they or a family member receive medical treatment at a Buffalo-area hospital. “While typically we cook in the kitchen and enjoy our meal with the guests, this time we cooked outside and individually wrapped all of the goodies for each guest,” says club advisor and teacher Jessica Kardashian. “Our club feels extremely fortunate to get to have this opportunity and to be able to be one of the first returning groups as we have been volunteering the past five years and our group is well known among the employees.” Silver Creek’s KAC club provided a meal of grilled hot dogs, pasta salad, grilled corn on the cob and homemade strawberry shortcakes for dessert. “It was a pivotal moment for our group as the dynamic has changed and some of our members who started high school volunteering were able to go one last time with us before graduating and it was full circle,” says Kardashian. We love watching our staff and students share these meaningful experiences and make a difference in our region. Way to go, Knights Against Cancer!
