Parent Broadcast 8/27/21

Good afternoon Silver Creek families,

I hope all of you are well, enjoying some family time and relaxing.

As promised at the end of last week, I want to provide another update as to our reopening plans for the start of the 2021-2022 school year.

The Administrative Team continues planning a fully in-person return to school model for all students with layered COVID mitigation strategies that were in place at the end of last school year. We have prioritized all students returning to an in-person learning model as evidence and research show that it is imperative that all students return to in-person learning models to appropriately address academic, social, emotional and mental health needs. The CDC, American Academy of Pediatrics, NYS Education Department and Chautauqua County Department of Health have all recommended that schools prioritize in-person learning. We continue to feel fortunate that we created and successfully implemented a highly effective in-person model last year as we presently modify and adjust, planning for all students to be in-person.   As we did last school year, we will continue to use the Center for Disease Control to guide us with scientific data supporting their recommendations.

Please know we are planning to start the upcoming school year as we ended last school year with all layered COVID prevention strategies we had in place when we ended the school year.

In accordance with the strongest recommendation from the CDC, NYSED and Chautauqua County starting this past Monday everyone is again required to wear masks at all times, whether vaccinated or not, while indoors.  Masks will be optional for all outdoors.

To review, please be aware of the following:

  • Everyone is required to wear a mask at all times indoors, vaccinated or not, effective Monday, August 23.
  • Masks are optional outdoors for all.
  • Any non-vaccinated adult and/or student that comes into contact with a COVID positive individual will be required to quarantine.
  • Vaccinated adults and students 12 and older that come into contact with a COVID positive individual will NOT have to quarantine unless they show symptoms.

The Administrative Team will be holding a Facebook Live Reopening plan question and answer next Tuesday, August 31 at 5:00pm. Please plan to join us if you have any questions.

Parent Broadcast 8/19/21

Good afternoon Silver Creek families,

I hope all of you are well, enjoying some family time and relaxing.

As promised at the end of last week, I want to provide another update as to our reopening plans for the start of the 2021-2022 school year.  We did receive guidance from Chautauqua County Department of Health recommending we follow the CDC recommendations.

Yesterday, Wednesday, August 18, we learned through various press releases that incoming Governor Kathy Hochul plans to direct the NYSDOH to issue a mask mandate within a few days of taking office (On Wednesday, August 25).  Because we learned this yesterday, we continue in a “holding pattern” for final guidance, but please know we are planning to start the upcoming school year as we ended last school year with all layered COVID prevention strategies we had in place when we ended the school year.

Next Monday, August 23, fall sports begin so there will be many more individuals throughout the building.  Therefore, in accordance with the strongest recommendation from the CDC, NYSED and Chautauqua County DOH, beginning Monday, August 23, everyone will once again be required to wear masks at all times, whether vaccinated or not, while indoors.

Once we finalize our reopening plan (after we receive guidance from NYSDOH), we intend to do a Parent Broadcast and Facebook Live session to both present and answer any questions that families may have.

Parent Broadcast 8/13/21/21

First of all, I am excited to share that the District and Board of Education continue to recognize that the pandemic has been a trying and extremely difficult time for our families and entire community.  This year the District will once again be providing all basic school supplies for students in all grade levels.  Parents will only be asked to provide specialty supplies such as art smock (an old t-shirt), appropriate gym shoes and a backpack to be worn by your child.  Please know that we have secured numerous backpacks to be provided to students as needed.  Contact your building office if you are in need of a backpack for the start of the year.

Secondly, the Administrative Team continues planning a fully in-person return to school model for all students with COVID mitigation strategies similar to how we ended last school year. We have prioritized all students returning to an in-person learning model as evidence and research show that it is imperative that all students return to in-person learning models to appropriately address academic, social, emotional and mental health needs. The CDC, American Academy of Pediatrics and NYS Education Department all have recommended that schools prioritize in-person learning. We are waiting for Chautauqua County DOH to release any guidelines to guide us, once these guidelines are released we will finalize our COVID strategies that we will put in place to prevent COVID transmission in our buildings. We expect the County to release these guidelines in the next few days. We feel fortunate that we have created and successfully implemented a highly effective in-person model that can be modified to meet any guidelines that the district must follow. As we did last school year, we will continue to use the Centers for Disease Control to guide us with scientific data supporting their recommendations.

I am hopeful that next week, after we receive updates from Chautauqua County Department of Health, we will be able to provide our final reopening plans. We intend to do Parent Broadcasts and Facebook Live sessions to both present and answer any questions that families may have.  Have a great weekend!

Parent Broadcast 8/10/21

Good afternoon Silver Creek School Families:

The Silver Creek Administrative Team had been planning to present building specific reopening plans directly after the release of anticipated New York State Department of Health guidance we were told we would receive.   However, as we have come to expect in this uncertain time, we were informed last Wednesday, August 4 that neither the Governor nor the NYS Department of Health will be issuing guidance to schools.  They stated that schools will be solely responsible to create reopening plans.  The Chautauqua County School Superintendent’s organization is presently reaching out to the Chau. Co. Director of Health and Safety to gather their professional recommendations.  Additionally, we are arranging a meeting with our Silver Creek Central School Medical Director to seek his professional input.  Even this morning we received a letter from the NYS Department of Education stating that since there is no direction forthcoming from New York State Department of Health that the NYS Department of Education intends to provide reopening plan guidance very soon.  We are currently waiting to see how this unfolds.

Presently, we are planning a model similar to how we ended last school year. We are closely watching health trends in our community, as well as waiting for any direct guidance from the local health department and the NYS Department of Education in order to provide guidance for a safe learning environment for our students and adults.  We are fortunate that we have a highly effective in-person model that can be modified to meet any guidelines that the district must follow. As we did last school year, we will continue to use the Centers for Disease Control to guide us with scientific data supporting their recommendations.

It is important to know that we are anticipating the return of all of our students in-person.

I am hopeful that within the next few days as soon as we receive any guidance from the NYS Department of Education and/or Chau CO Department of Health, I will be able to provide a more specific update with the reopening plans.  Once again, thank you for your patience.   Stay safe and enjoy the remaining summer!

 7/29/2021

Good afternoon everyone,

I hope all of you are enjoying your summers so far.  I wanted to provide an update as to mask guidance and fall 2021 reopening.

Mask Guidance- as you may be aware, yesterday the Center for Disease Control is now recommending that all individuals, vaccinated or not,  should go back to wearing masks in indoor public places in regions where the coronavirus is spreading rapidly.  Additionally, the  CDC is now recommending all students, teachers and staff at schools for kindergarten through 12th grade wear masks regardless of whether they were vaccinated.  At present time, we are going to continue with our current mask wearing protocol as determined by the NYSDOH—vaccinated individuals are not required to wear a mask indoors or out.  You may certainly wear one if you feel more comfortable. Furthermore, we are awaiting updated guidance from NYSDOH regarding this recommendation which we hope will be released in the near future.

Fall 2021 Reopening- As promised at the end of the school year, I am updating all staff and community members with a mid-summer update.  We have NOT received any official update and/or guidance from NYSDOH regarding fall 2021 reopening plans.  Please be aware that the NYS Council of School Superintendents has been aggressively pushing both NYS Department of Education and NYSDOH that we need guidance asap so we can properly plan and prepare for reopening.  Please know the administrative team continues to prepare for in-person learning as we are hopeful and believe that in-person learning is best for kids.

The Buildings and Grounds Department continues its efforts to clean the district rooms/buildings and will “slowly and strategically” begin moving desks/chairs/furniture into classrooms as we prepare for in-person learning.  Although we are starting to move items back into classrooms, we are being extremely cautious until we get specific guidance from NYSED and NYSDOH.

Thank you all for your continued support and patience as we await further updates and guidance.  We all remain united in this together so that together we will get through this for OUR students and community.
