Upward Bound

Upward Bound is a cost-free program, initiated in 1965 as part of the War on Poverty. It is a federal pre-college program designed to help students complete high school and succeed in higher education.

The 
Upward Bound program at the State University of New York at Fredonia is one of only 700 programs across the nation. The Upward Bound program at Fredonia fosters academic and life successes by encouraging and empowering students in their pursuit of post-secondary education.

Who is eligible? Participants must meet the following guidelines:
Be 13 to 19 years of age and in at least 9th grade
Be motivated and have the academic potential to attend college
Be enrolled in a participating high school in Chautauqua County (Brocton, Dunkirk, Chautauqua Lake, Silver Creek, and Ripley)
Meet federal income guidelines and/or be a first-generation college student

Services:
Monthly workshops at Fredonia State
Academic assessment and advisement
Afterschool tutoring in English, Foreign Languages, Math, Science, Social Studies
Cultural Events and other field trips
SAT and ACT test preparation sessions
Assistance with college application and financial aid processes
Alumni follow-up until completion of baccalaureate degree

Summer program highlights:
Participate in a 6-week program at Fredonia State
Attend academic enrichment and elective courses
Live in a college residence hall
Participate in health and wellness and leadership development activities
Attend field trips
Make new friends
Receive a stipend
