Middle School Students Showcase Skills at Unified Basketball Event

Students from Silver Creek Middle School recently participated in a regional Unified Basketball Showcase hosted by the Special Olympics of New York in collaboration with the Cleveland Cavaliers. The event marked the first Middle School Unified Basketball Showcase in Western New York.
Silver Creek was the only school representing Chautauqua County among six participating districts, which included Iroquois, East Aurora, Eden, Sweet Home, and Amherst. In total, more than 100 students took part in the event.
In preparation for the showcase, students practiced within their home districts, with Silver Creek athletes also training alongside the school’s varsity Unified Basketball team. On April 29, students and coaches traveled to the Ken-Ton YMCA, where they demonstrated their basketball skills for peers and visited youth coaches from the Cavaliers’ organization. Activities included drills focused on dribbling, passing, and scoring.
Beyond skill development, the event emphasized the principles of Unified Sports, which bring together students with and without disabilities to compete on the same team. The program promotes inclusion, teamwork, and mutual respect while providing opportunities for all students to participate in athletics.
