Dress Code: An Important Part of the Educational Climate

The District has designed a Code of Conduct that includes a student dress code. The dress code was written with two major features in mind; safety for all students and hygiene concerns. Beginning in January 2024, all elements that are stated in the Code of Conduct will be enforced. It is important that the school community and our students respect and support this policy.

A student’s dress, grooming and appearance, including accessories, hair style etc., shall:

  1. Be safe, appropriate and not substantially disrupt or interfere with the educational process. Extremely brief garments and see-through garments are not appropriate.
  2. Ensure that underwear is covered with outer clothing.
  3. Footwear is required at all times.  Footwear that may be a safety hazard will not be allowed.
  4. Specific dress requirements may be required by the District for students participating in activities in which clothing and accessories (i.e., long baggy clothes, jewelry) may be a safety or health concern, such as science laboratories, physical education and interscholastic athletics.
  5. Not include items that present a threat to the student’s, or another student’s, health or safety.
  6. Not include the wearing of hats during the school day except for a medical or religious purpose or unless otherwise authorized by the school.
  7. Not include items that are lewd, vulgar, obscene, suggestive (of a sexual nature), libelous or denigrate others on account of race, color, religion, creed, national origin, gender, sexual orientation or disability or any other protected class under federal, state, or local law.
  8. Not promote and/or endorse the use of alcohol, tobacco, smoking paraphernalia or illegal drugs/substances and/or encourage other illegal or violent activities.

Each building principal, assistant principal or dean will be responsible for informing all students and their parents/guardians of the student dress code at the beginning of the school year and any revisions to the dress code made during the school year. Students who do not adhere to the dress code expectations may be asked to:

  1. modify their appearance by covering or removing the offending item.
  2. replace it with an acceptable item.

Students who refuse or repeatedly fail to cooperate with the dress code expectations will be considered insubordinate and will be subject to discipline accordingly.
