BOE Member Discusses Cybersecurity

Silver Creek Central School District Board of Education member and former president Greg Cole recently participated in a cybersecurity presentation at the Chautauqua Harbor Hotel in Celoron.

Mr. Cole, a Computer Science and Computer Information Systems professor at The State University of New York at Fredonia, spoke on the topic of “Cybersecurity in Schools” along with Scott Przywara, the Chief Data Protection, Security and Compliance Office for Erie 1 BOCES, ahead of a dinner held Sept. 16, 2020, at the hotel.

They discussed terminology of spyware, ransomware, denial of service attacks, and an overview of the threats that school districts face. Mr. Przywara also discussed various Western New York Regional Information Center (WNYRIC) services and co-ser agreements. A question-and-answer session was offered at the conclusion of the presentation.

Mr. Cole, who retired as an educator from Erie 2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES and was stationed at the Lake Shore Central School District for most of his career, now also serves on the Board of Education for E2CCB.

The meeting was held in a large room to provide space for social distancing and was facilitated by the Chautauqua County School Boards Association.
